Echoes of Light

We can only see the world within the reach of light. And cinema, to me, is the act of quietly carrying light and sound into the dark— of making the voices within silence visible once more.

Yet there are those who cannot receive that light, and those who cannot hear its sound. Each time I make a film, I find myself asking, How can I deliver light? How can I hand over sound? That question has shaped not only my work, but also my path—my way of learning how to reconnect with the world.

Through film screenings and museum installations, I have explored different ways of sharing moving images. How can sound be conveyed to those who cannot hear it? How can images be shared with those who cannot see? Each small attempt has been a quiet experiment— a way for light and sound to cross time and space and reach another person’s heart.

The film project I am now developing, A Sacred Lie, follows a woman entangled in a miscarriage of justice in Japan. By depicting her story, I hope to reflect on the society that chose not to see. Between righteousness and indifference, shadows fall. Rather than merely portraying those shadows, I wish to face them together— to turn the filmmaking process itself into a small space of dialogue, where people from different languages and cultures can weave under the same light.

For me, this path is also a journey of listening to what lies beyond sight. There, unspoken voices quietly shape the world. So that what is unseen may become visible to someone, and what is unheard may be heard by someone. To pass the echoes of light and sound into the future— that is where the journey called Light Echoes begins.
